Puppy 5.3.3 (development name = Slacko), uses the latest Puppy [[Woof]]2 build code, programs and scripts, combined with high [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slackware Slackware]] 13.37 binary software packages compatibility. Months of testing, upgrades and updates. Includes hardware recognition, programs and scripts unique to Puppy. //Slacko is our latest, primary, recommended Puppy.//
== Puppy 5.3.3 Features ==
~Slacko Puppy 5.3.3
~Slacko Puppy Linux 5.3.3 is an update release of the recent 5.3.1. It has binary compatibility with Slackware-13.37, which simply means that it is a Puppy built with packages from the Slackware, Salix and Slacky repositories.
~The main version has been upgraded with kernel 3.1.10 compiled with Aufs, layered file system support, in the typical Puppy manner. There is also a PAE version to cater for machines with large amounts of RAM. Both iso images have SCSI boot support.
~The [[SeaMonkey Seamonkey-2.9.1]] suite is the default browser and email suite but [[Firefox]], [[Chromium]], [[Opera]], [[Netsurf]], [[Iron]],[[Dillo]] and [[Links]] are only a few clicks away.
~Minimum system requirements for the main version are an i686 processor, 900MHZ, with 256MB RAM. For the PAE version a slightly newer processor may be needed as most but not all processors support PAE.

==Slacko Software==
~[[Slickpet]] is a cut down version of Quickpet to get a few handy apps without diving into the well stocked Puppy Package manager. Slickpet also supports installing SFS packages, which are modules that are loadable as layers in the Puppy filesystem. Packages such as Libreoffice-3.5.3, JRE and Samba3.5.4 are available.
~While on the Puppy Package Manager, apart from Puppy's native PET package format it can also fetch Slackware, Salix and Slacky packages in tgz or txz format.
~Puppy's sfs format is supported by a program called sfs_load. Sfs are a way to load layered filesystems so that the filesystems can be unioned and act as one. Read more.
~Slacko has [[Abiword]] and [[Gnumeric]], late versions to open those documents and spreadsheets to keep you working.
~Lots of types of multimedia are supported so you can play hard.
~Slacko is aimed at reasonably modern machines up to six or seven years old. It may run on even older hardware.
~Much work has gone into fine tuning packages such as Samba and the light weight alternative Samba-TNG. There is also a netboot add on that allows you to boot Puppy over your LAN.

- Automatic 'personal storage file growth'/movement into a swap file
- Sorting out Browser/Flash incompatibilities on AMD dual core processors
- Menu Simplification - menu systems all need to be dragged up-to-date, such as giving the ability to drag application items between menu groups, create new groups, and hide groups not generally used until 'a menu spot is touched' or a new pet requiring that default group.
- An actual Recycle Bin. Deleted files go automatically to the Recycle Bin, which can be emptied. People expect this, numerous times in Puppy I have seen my mistake right after hitting Delete.
- On screen info messages with close button rather than timer eg. initial boot up message
- A ppm userset directory (defaults to /root/pets) and matching auto-indexing ppm entry point that users can place pets from other sources into and install / remove via the ppm.
- As in Lucid, boot to desktop, quickset, browser installer (for alternatives to Seamonkey) and [[LucidPuppyQuickpet Quickpet/Slickpet]]

//The choice of which distro's packages are used is not really up to me. It is really a question of who will "run with the ball". playdayz had the determination and stamina to bring [[puppy526 Lucid Puppy]] to release status and to coordinate a series of upgrades. It was playdayz who choose Ubuntu packages, and the choice for the next Puppy (5.3) is also up to whoever is going to manage it.// **[[http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02248 Barry K full message]]**

Ian Milgrew - I would love to support Puppy 5.3 so just let me know how I can help and I'll do the best that I can.
Scsijon - You can add me in somewhere, testing, those few apps I 'package', a spare site to host the alphas/betas to spread the load, anything else I can do.

- Menu Simplification - menu systems all need to be dragged up-to-date, such as giving the ability to drag application items between menu groups, create new groups, and hide groups not generally used until 'a menu spot is touched' or a new pet requiring that default group.
- One Application per function by default
- All applications on install give you the option of an onscreen shortcut
- Onscreen info messages with close button rather than timer eg. initial boot up message
- A ppm userset directory (?defaults to /root/pets) and matching auto-indexing ppm entry point that users can place pets from other sources into and install / remove via the ppm.

Additions:
- An actual Recycle Bin. Deleted files go automatically to the Recycle Bin, which can be emptied. People expect this--numerous times in Puppy I have seen my mistake right after hitting Delete.
- An Audio Control Panel. It should let me select which of my cards will be Default--and change that easily. It should also contain a nicer mixer--retrovol works, and alsmixergui works, but better looking, more intuitive apps. Because my M-Audio card is controlled through alsamixer my wife encountered it the other night and my Puppy work lost some credibility around this house Wink This is another thing people have come to expect.
