Lucid Puppy SFS Tutorial

text

So you have clicked the SFS Support menu entry in Quickpet and landed here!
What now? Read on...

Below there are some links to SFS files.
Perhaps you are wondering what exactly an SFS is?
SFS stands for Squash File System
Puppy Linux utilises these SFS files.
The SFS is compressed, hence "Squash".
SFS needs to be mounted like any other Linux file system.

Puppy sets up several "layers" of file systems at first boot
and has the ability to add more SFS layers.
People in the Puppy community make large programs
such as Open Office into SFS because a Pet would populate much of Puppy's savefile.
NOTE: These procedures work only with a frugal installation.
Unfortunately, SFS files cannot be installed using the bootloader with a full installation.
The SFS must be mounted and the individual files placed in the proper directories.
Try this sfs install program or thisPET MAKER PLUS, one of which may work, otherwise the files must be copied manually to the proper directories on the hard drive.

SFS files that work well with Lucid

Amarok dejan555‘s amarok-xxx-sfs4-sfs
kmymoney sidder’s kmymoney2_0,89-1_xxx.sfs
Open office 3.2 dingo’s openoffice3.2-sfs4_xxx.sfs

*Note that some of these are not direct links

Now, download an SFS and save it to /mnt/home.
You can configure your browser's download manager to do this to save mucking about later.
Once your file is in you can open "Bootmanager" from the Menu.
Click "Menu (or Start) > System > Bootmanager". A window appears.

Click the "Choose which SFS to load at bootup" button and you see the next window.

You choose your SFS from the left pane,
add it to the right pane with the arrow, click "ok" and you are done.
Now reboot and your SFS is ready

The sfs_linker program by jrb, still in development, allows for mounting of SFS files on the fly, without a reboot.
