Java Runtime Environment

Java Runtime Environment runs programs written in Java. Not to be confused with JavaScript.

Installation

Install the appropriate package, newer versions should be more secure:

jre-1.7u45-i586.sfs directory (October 2013) packaged by Shinobar, thread

Java JRE 1.7u25, 1.6u45 as pet or sfs thread packaged by TheAsterisk

jre-1.7-17.sfs thread packaged by TheZenKitteh

jre-1.7u10-i586.sfs download packaged by watchdog, post

Alternatively, use script to make package:

jre1.7.0_17 script post written by jpeps

Packages may also be available in the SlickPet/QuickPet app.

Version Check and Enabling

Verify the installed version via the command-line interface:

java -version

Alternatively visit one of the following pages:

testjava (java.com)

version (javatester.org) - finds even if disabled in browser

A symlink may need adding to the plugin directory, for example for seamonkey:

ln -s /usr/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Web browser configuration confirmation (JavaScript needs to be enabled within the Web browser):

LibreOffice

Enable Java: Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Java

SeaMonkey

Enable Java: Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Enable Java

Firefox

Enable Java: Tools > Options > Content > Enable Java

Opera

Enable Java: Tools > Quick Preferences > Enable Plug-ins

Enable JavaScript: Tools > Quick Preferences > Enable JavaScript

Applications may need to be configured and re-started after installation.
