- a computer that can boot from a flash drive
- a 256MB or larger USB Flash drive (depending on the version of Puppy Linux you are installing, you may need a larger drive)
- an installation of Puppy Linux, or a working Live-CD
To install to a USB, boot up Puppy Linux, make sure the USB drive is plugged in, and click the "install" icon on the menu.
Then select the first option. (Universal Installer NOT the BootFlash USB installer)
From the list provided, pick "USB Flash Drive" or "USB Hard Drive", depending on what you have.
Select your device from the list.
Click the "Install Puppy to sdb" (it might be sdc, sdd, ect.)
Click OK.
If you have the Live-CD, insert it at this point and click "CD". If you don't have the CD, extract the ISO to a folder, then click "Directory" and choose the vmlinuz, the initrd.gz, or the .sfs from the folder you extracted the ISO to.
Press enter.
If you want to KEEP YOUR FILES, click enter. If you want to delete everything on the drive, type "a" then enter.
If you want puppy linux to load into RAM when it boots up, (slower bootup, faster when running), type "a" then enter. If you DO NOT want puppy linux to be loaded to RAM on startup (faster boot, applications open a little slower), type enter.
To run Puppy Linux from a Live-CD or Live-DVD:
- Make sure the USB is plugged in, and that the computer is off.
- Turn on your computer, a screen should come up that says "Press key1 to enter setup, or key2 to change boot order". (It will probably be at the bottom, and you may have to reboot a few times to read it) Press key2 quickly. (It will probably be F1 - F12).
- Select your USB from the list.
